Do you have disconnect anxiety?

It’s the feelings of disorientation and nervousness experience when a person is deprived or Internet or wireless access.

Statistics show that more than 50% of Canadian blackberry owners have taken their devices or a laptop into the bathroom. The results from another study show that 26% of Canadians exhibit elevated levels of disconnect anxiety, predominately in the younger age demographics.  

Experts are divided on the theoretical explanations of staying connected. Some suggest that it’s a return to tribalism, where a person is a member in a virtual tribe. Others suggest it says something about our ability or inability to be alone without feeling loneliness.  

A MIT professor questions our relationship to the communications technology. If some kid is spending 10 hours a day on Facebook, what’s missing in the rest of his life?
