Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe must go

In light of the escalating violence following the recent elections, there is an urgent need for the African Union (AU), with the support of the United Nations, to provide independent observers to monitor the run-off elections.

We must agree with those who say that if Africa cannot chastise Mugabe over his belligerence and bigotry; then what does it stand for? If the continent, “with a heart gnawed by poverty, misrule and exploitation”, cannot raise a finger over what is happening in Zimbabwe, then who should?

It is time that someone in Africa stands up and says to Mugabe, who has been in power for 28 years, during which the country was turned from a food basket to a basket case, that enough is enough.

Zimbabwe is now a classic case of a failed state. The rest of Africa, in the name of respecting another nation’s sovereignty, should not just stand, hands akimbo, hoping that South Africa’s President Thambo Mbeki’s prescription of “quiet diplomacy” will work?

It is a shame to Africa, that there is a president clinging to power despite a March 29 election defeat. It took over a month to announce the results and even when they came, Mugabe still trailed. But the margin was not as big as to avoid a run-off with the Movement for
Democratic Change’s (MDC) candidate Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mugabe is now on a two-phased war so familiar with Africa’s strongmen. First, he is preparing for a run-off, which according to the constitution should take place on May 24, hoping it is boycotted by MDC.

Second, he is using state machinery to terrorise those who voted for the opposition.

When Kenya was on the precipice because of flawed elections, some had the courage to speak out. The AU, in fact, dispatched mediators; not so in Zimbabwe whose future lies not in a re-run because the environment is not conducive to electioneering.

There must be negotiations and reconciliation between Mugabe and Tsvangirai. This can only take place if African leaders flex their muscles and deploy their diplomatic skills. Sadly, many, like Mugabe, wield power in a similar fashion.

By omission, they are part and parcel of the problem.
